The problem is probably the permission of the device for the CD-ROM.

If you are using the traditional device files:

	ls -l /dev/cdrom

to see which actual your CD-ROM is.

On my system:

lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root    3 Nov  5  2003 /dev/cdrom -> hdc

The link points to: "hdc".  So, I would then:

	ls -l /dev/hdc

and see what the actual permissions are.
