New KDE hammered X11

Greetings

I have just installed the latest stable kdelib, kdedir, and kdevelop from
tarballs on a machine I access via ssh over an ethernet. Out of nowhere, I
am suddenly getting X errors:

X11 connection rejected because of wrong authentication.
kdevelop: Fatal IO error: client killed

I can log in as root and it works. Can someone point me to the file(s)
that kde might have changed so I can try to fix this?
