kmail

I'm in the process of moving my home directory from one machine to a new one.
I'm using kde 3.1. I tried copying the ~/Mail directory, but the files
containging archived mail messages refuse to copy. When I dig into the
~/Mail folder, I find that the inbox, sent-mail, and trash directories copied
just fine, and when I place these on the new machine running kde 3.2, all my
messages are intact.

However, the contents of any Kmail folder containing archived messages refuse
to copy. For example, there is a directory containing three sub-driectories
called new, cur, and tmp. The first two are populated by files that appear
to represent unread and read messages that have been placed in that kmail
folder. Each file is from 1-3 kb, and there is one for each message.

I have tried copying these files from the file manager, from a console, and
from the command line without running a window manager, either as a normal
user or as root . I have tried copying the files to several different
network drives and to a USB stick drive and I always get a message telling me
that the files can not be written. These are the only files that behave this
way.

Can anyone suggest a reason why I can't move these files? How can I copy them
to my new machine so I don't loose my e-mail history?

TIA
Paul
