Lock Screen not working after some time

(RedHat 7.3 and KDE 3.1)

Hi,

Malte Schuenemann first reported this sometime ago (Nov '02). It seems
that if a vmware session has the mouse and keyboard focus, the screen
lock doesn't work. Here's what I can see:

User walks away from desk with autolock selected for 5 mins. Vmware has
grabbed the mouse and keyboard since the user was using it last. Five
minutes later, as expected, the kdesktop_lock process springs into life.
But it doesn't lock the screen for some reason (interaction with
vmware?). Later on the user returns and is surprised by the fact that
his screen has not automatically locked. Later on he walks away, but
having learnt something from the previous experience, he tries to lock
his screen manually with the kicker applet. Vmware has given up its
mouse/keyboard grab, because the mouse is over kicker, but the lock
fails (seems to do nothing) because the old autolock kdesktop_lock is
still running.

Work around: Killing the first kdesktop_lock allows the manual lock to
work again. Turning off autolock makes sure that kdesktop_lock doesn't
start when vmware has the focus and you should not get into difficulty
again. But of course, you have to manually lock your desktop before you
leave.

Is there a better fix?

Thanks,
Nick.
