Where does your wine config file point your c: drive to?  It is possible 
that you have wine mapping your c: drive to something like 
/home/mylogin/.wine/fake_c.  This would let you open and run irfanview, but 
the location of the windows directory would not be right.  If you are using 
wine, and not winex, you should find your config file in ~/.wine/config.  I 
think.
