bidi typing does not work

hi list,

i recently installed KDE3 on my slackware machine, because of the
arabic support it now has. it works partially.

i set the country to egypt, and i got an arabic interface: the K menu,
the menu bars in the applications, they are all in arabic. beautiful. :-)

i then selected two keyboards, dvorak and arabic. as a test, i tried
writing an e-mail in arabic, but no go... when i select the arabic
keyboard, the writing direction stays left-to-right, and the
characters i get are from an extended european set, containing stuff
like the german ringel-ss ß, icelandic thorn þ and eth ð, scandinavian
ligatures æ, Æ etc.

i get the same thing with Kate and other places where i can enter
text. i have made sure i set the font to one that contains arabic
(arial xft), but i get the same thing. (plus, i can't imagine the font
would change the writing direction.)

obviously there is something wrong, but i have no idea where to
look. is bidi standard in KDE3 or does it have to be compiled in? am i
missing some configuration option? i would appreciate any help or
pointers.

TIA
