problem installing kde

Tal,

Thank you for the reply. You are most kind.
I am a longtime Solaris user, but
new to Linux, so I am still finding my
way around. I appreciate your help.

I did as you suggested, and removed old kde packages with:
rpm -e *kde

It completed, however, the session hung, requiring a restart
of the X server, creating a new problem.

I receive an error message during init which tells me that Linux
find crucial files needed, like kdeinit.

I have a command line login (without X).
I tried running the command:
rpm -ivh *rpm
which throws an error telling me:
"FileXYZ: Message file not found: Success".
and that's all. It stops there.

I don't know what to make of it.

I don't know how to fix up the system so that
I can either install KDE 3.0, or the previous 2.2.2.

I have original media for RH 7.2
Should I try to reinstall 2.2.2 or keep trying with 3.0?
If 3.0, then how?

TIA,
-Christian
