Vertical tabs are not by themselves evil. They just take a lot of space 
and space constraints make it hard to use them (since not the whole text 
is visible).
Also, vertical tabs tend to be used in nested situations (so, when 
horizontal tabs are also in use) which is just confusing, but probably 
less confusing than having two horizontal lines of tabs.

I.e. There is a place for them, it just is rarely that you end up using 
them where it is the best solution there is.
