Cases in which I think it will be helpful are when user is not using the desktop applet for some reason, or to quickly open the contact list from the chat window (eg using a shortcut).
Personally now that I'm using it, I find it very convenient being able to open the contact list (eg. after I receive a new message) without having to move the mouse all over to the system tray</pre>
