Or perhaps the user could be allowed to set a photo for a person that is not an avatar...
But probably this should be clarified on the ontology side...

How do we chose which [Name|Presence|Avatar|etc] from the child contacts to use. I don't propose we solve that problem within the scope of this patch.</pre>
