Sorry I cannot be specific. I set this at roughly the same time as  
creating the kde4 app sym links in /opt/local/bin. All I can say for  
sure is after doing both these things I have not had nearly so many  
problems with applications failing to start properly, messages like  
"cannot find kXYZ" etc. Also, it seems I no longer need to start  
kdeinit4 by hand any more.

I'll try disabling it to try and disentangle whether it is the  
symlinks or KDEDIR that has improved things, or both.

That said, setting KDEDIR is another 'standard' thing that is done on  
all linux distros' I have used, so doing it aswell on OSX can only  
help I think..
