Another widget.  There's no reason why you can't replace kickoff, then also 

install lancelot.  Use both, decide which you like, then remove the other.  

They're both just widgets, so it's easy and safe to do so.

Thanks (again) Anne and James - have now fixed the missing launcher.<br>

Anne - tried Lancelot.  Is it supposed to be this big cup (holy grail?)

sitting on one's desktop?  Seemed to be mostly like the default,

although this was just from a reasonably cursory look.<br>
