The problem is that thunderbird garnered so many Outlook Express users
that they had to dumb down the product to keep these idiots happy as
officially explained here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Stop_threading_by_subject
and as a result the broke their perfectly good package by turning off the
threading engine leaving you no choice but to sort by subject.

Follow the instructions on that page to turn on proper threading
(they probably are the same for icedove) and use it threaded for a week

I've already tried it. I find the threaded view useless, since the
moment I do anything like sort by date, the threaded view is turned off.

Sorry, I'm not going to waste my time for a week on this.
I use Seamonkey here. Try doing it this way. Tell it to sort by date
then hit sort by thread. On mine, it seems to remember the previous
sort then puts it in order by thread. Maybe Seamonkey is different but
it may be worth a try.

I to sort by threads. Sorting by subject does not always work.
Sorting by the headers has always worked for me and it appears to work
for others as well.

Point is, this and other lists have a way of doing things. Either
adjust a bit or responses may be limited. I had to set mine up to send
text only because a lot of people reject html. I top post everywhere
else EXCEPT when I reply to a list. It didn't take me to long to
figure out that either I was back to the forums or I had to do things
they way they are expected to be done. It's sort of like following the
rules. Either you do, or you don't.

Also keep in mind, the very people that are telling you this, is the
very ones that can help you most. They are generally the experts that
have been doing this for a long time. Poking them in the eye may not
be a good idea.
My $0.02 worth. Your choice.
