Using RAID 1 is a good idea, however you need to be comfortable in creating it. If you are using SuSe the Yast partition tool will make life a lot easier, however there is much to take into account<BR>
in mirroring a partition that needs to be researched so that when the first HDD fails you will not have too much trouble utilising its mirror. RAID 1 is easy to create, however in the event you need to use the mirror partition solely comes the time for knowing exactly what to do.<BR>

The other possible way is to install Kdar - I would NOT recommend using this application for backing up a LARGE amounts of data as it has the following misgivings<BR>
1. V2.0.7 has no verify option and Kdar will happily create a corrupted file - Trust me - Its done it to be 4 times.<BR>
2. If you backup a large amount of data Kdar will demand CPU resources and ignore system throttling and despite your system being configured to notify on critical temp it will continue until the BIOS shuts you PC down. This has happened to me 2 times.<BR>

The other backup tool is konserv - its a bastard and will frequently abend with audit trail - Its current code nothing short of Beta.<BR>

Not withstanding the above if the amount of data to be backed up is relatively small Kdar will do the trick and burning the achieve to a CD will alert you as to the files integrity.<BR>

If you are thinking about backing to tape or serious about backups you can see <A HREF="http://www.storix.com/">http://www.storix.com/</A> and possibly consider tape or DVD. <BR>
<BR>
Your cheapest and possible your best scenario is to use a DVD drive to store the files. RAID 1 - Mirroring is fine but in time that drive will also fail as its load is equal to the primary drive.<BR>
