this version? I used to have nice, compact menus in Kmenu. Now each
category sprawls all over the screen. I would really like to disable this

I don't like the new menu either.
The menu configuration is set by:
$KDEDIR/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu
or:
/etc/xdg/menus/applications.menu
to change back to the old menu, just replace it with the older one. You
should find it in this directory:
http://websvn.kde.org/tags/KDE/<version>/kdelibs/kded/

Thanks for the tip. I have now upgraded to the older menu layout :p. No luck
yet on getting HAL to work, but that seems to be as more a Slackware problem
than a KDE problem.

Are you using this version of hal?
That is what I am using and it works fine here. I do recall KDE 3.4.*
requiring a certain version or higher of Hal.
