[kde-linux] How to add applications to panel

Ad soon as I move the mouse outside the panel/controlbar, the controlbar 
disappears. If I try to drag the application icon from the desktop, it just 
goes underneath the panel - in fact, I lost one icon because it is now 
completely hidden by the panel and I couldn't find it anywhere under ~/.kde4.
