[kde-linux] Fedora 4 - Sound problems

Every time I boot Fedora 4 I get the artsmessage "Error while initializing the sound driver. Device default cannot be opened for playback (invalid argument)". It doesn't matter if I am signed on as ROOT or not. Yet the Sound card is detected Esoniq (ES1371 (AudioPCI-97)) and the test music plays. 
 
I cannot play a CD or do internet radio. 
 
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
