Hi,

I got information about this mailing list from the KDE Documentation
web page. I hope this is the right list to post the message :)

I am currently a student, and my coding skills are not upto the mark.
Nevertheless, I would really want to contribute to KDE. I have gone
through the guides mentioned on the web site, and the documentation primer.

I would hence request you to suggest me a suitable starting point, and
also whether to start off with KDE 3 or KDE 4. Also, if there are any
other ways to get involved in the KDE documentation project, I would
be glad if you could inform me of the same.

Here is a small patch correcting some typos in the kexi handbook that I 
caught while I was translating it into french.

In this handbook, the few chapter references are written directly in the 
docbook file and are not always coherent (there is a "chapter 5.2" in 
designingforms.docbook, while the chapter mentioned is in fact the 3.2). 
Is there a better way to make references to other chapters ?

I compared the docs in stable and trunk, EBN issues have already been fixed in 
trunk, but there is no new content.

Please work with the docs from trunk, as this is the newer one. We can

Thank you, I will make those changes. Also, I thought -trunk is
supposed to be the KDE4 playground, and -branch is for KDE3 work.

I am free to take it on if nobody else is interested. I am finishing up the 
Kubuntu help system (string freeze is the 8th), so all I will have to do this 
week is complete that, xml2po >> rosetta << repos >> package and I will be 
open. I am planning on working on KDE 4 docs as much as possible for the 
better half of this year now. I already have SVN access so that is a good 
start :)  Let me know where you need me.

In stable (recent 3.5 compiled from sources) I have a Go and Window menu, depending on the profile.

	Today, I had an accident with the "tar" command (version 1.14, 30 November 2006) 
that made me loose the work of hours. From my earlier experiences with "tar", I 
believed that it should not overwrite new files with older ones. It does, and, 
even more amazingly, a deliberate design choice dictates a complicated option 
"--keep-newer-files" to prevent this (as I discovered only after the damage occured).
	Apparently, it is believed that the situation does not normally occur. It does. 
At my job, I have a pc, and also a laptop to work at home. I regularly use tar 
files to transfer data from the pc to the laptop and vice versa. There are two 
ways for this: one is to pack only the files that changed (with a risk of 
forgetting one); the other is to get all files around, both changed and unchanged. 
With due care, this never went wrong when I had an older "tar", but the current 
version considerably increases the risk of a clash.
	The principle to be followed by "tar" should clearly be this:

--> When a newer file is going to be replaced by an extracted older one, it is 
most probably not intentional. Only an explicit option may allow "tar" to do it; 
not the other way round. Isn't this common sense?

	Let me take the occasion to report another type of accident with "tar", that 
could easily be prevented. When composing a list of argument files for "tar", I 
sometimes forget to name an archive file (more often I noticed this just in time 
before pressing "return"). As a result, the first named argument file is used and 
overwritten. Such disasters could be avoided if "tar" would insist on a standard 
postfix (like ".tgz") when creating an archive, with an explicit option to make 
"tar" more tolerant on (absence of) postfixes.

Taking these suggestions into consideration would be of help to avoid some 
unnecessary problems with a very useful command.

I would like to backport some documentations from trunk to stable.

1. New docs I found so far

fixes like eg kbackgammon, kshisen, kpdf, kpercentage, ktouch, kturtle, juk,

There should be no objections to backport this stuff.

3. Docs only with ebn, typo and markup fixes, in addons, admin, edu, games,

I will not backport these docs, except you give me your explicit Ok to do so.

Sorry for the late response. My exams are coming up, hence the delay
in response.

I have prepared a patch. I am also attaching the modified file, since
the patch was made on windows, and I wouldn't trust it :-)

After the exams, I intend to complete the documentation, so as to
close the bug once and for all :-)

Unfortunately, these update will never be visible for the user... KDE 4 KGet 
will have a completely new userinterface, thus also a new user doc. See 
http://commit-digest.org/issues/2007-02-25/

You need to commit these changes to the 3.5 branch if possible.

Hi.

I'm not clear on the ins and outs, particularly concerning string
freezes, of fixing documentation problems in the KDE 3.x series. 

I saw some changes that could be made in the KPatience manual. I
started editing to a copy of the Docbook file. I was unsure about a few
things,  which I'll bring up in a separate e-mail. I'll illustrate what
I'm lost about using KPatience as an example.

As I understand it:
* Everything under the /trunk directory is in active development for
KDE4.
* Some, not all, applications are also under /branches/$app (or
/branches/work/$app for stuff not in core distribution). /branches is
for working on the KDE 3.x versions of the applications, so new
features of those apps can be added to arrive for users in KDE
3.5x/3.6/7.

I saw some tweaks, grammar and the like, that could be made to the
present kpat manual while browsing the installed version on my KDE
3.5.5 desktop.

Ideally, folks should work on trunk docs. But KDE4 is still a way off.
Is there any value in (also?) working on the documentation to benefit
users of future KDE 3.x series releases?
KPatience is in active development with changes being made to how it
works (new keybindings for example) in /trunk. As far as I know it
isn't being worked on to make a new version for future KDE 3.x releases
as well.

Unless I have a working KDE4 development installation to run the
current KPatience development version, I won't be easily able to write
updated documentation through checking against its changes/new
features.

However, say I propose clarity/grammar fixes for the current KDE 3.x
manual. The manual for the KDE4 version would benefit from these same
changes. In other words, working from an updated index.docbook that had
already had any earlier wording errors fixed, so only changes like new
keybindings or new features normally needed to be added.

In the case of kpat, I decided to work on the index.docbook file in
/trunk. I did this because a) changes reflecting new features hadn't
been added to it yet anyway, and b) I'd make sure to include any
wording  fixes added since the last KDE release. Bug #103079 is an
example of such a fix (though from a while back and already in the KDE
3.x manual). I changed the releaseinfo number to match the application
version in the current stable KDE 3.x release. If somebody patching a
doc made a diff for each release - branch and trunk, then they'd need a
different releaseinfo number in each I suppose.

Perhaps it's too late. Will changes to manuals be able to reach users
for future KDE 3.x releases, including those apps not simultaneously
worked on under a 3.5x branch?

It has been a bit confusing recently; hopefully this clears it up:

Currently we aren't writing any docs for KDE 4, since the applications mostly 
are too much in a state of flux. We've been using trunk/ as a kind 
of "holding ground" for any changes we make, since these changes can of 
course be useful for later KDE 4 docs.

We also have semi-regular string unfreezes on the 3.5 branch, during which we 
backport any changes of content (ie, not just spelling/grammar/markup 
changes) from trunk/. We currently have a string unfreeze targetting 3.5.7, 
so any new content committed to trunk can be backported to the branch, and 
will appear in 3.5.7. (Incidentally, the 3.5 series is the last of the KDE 3 
releases - there might be a 3.5.8, but there won't be a 3.6)

The tentative release schedule for KDE 4.0 [1] suggests we will soon need to 
start working on docs for KDE 4, so this will change at some point.

The release schedule isn't tentative any longer.  It is a fact .. until it changes
due to unforseen circumstances.

Since the application feature freeze is on 1 June, it probably would be smart
to delay making major handbook changes for KDE4.0 until after that date.

Do you want me to put an entry in the Release Schedule to remind us
that 2 June is a good time to start updating the Handbooks (and writing
new Handbooks, as the case my be) ?

A diff against KPatience index.docbook from trunk is attached for
review. 

It's mainly wording changes that I think make it sound clearer. Please
let me know if you think they don't! I can remove changes on request
and keep any there's a consensus we should keep. Some things I was
unsure about, so those questions are further down.

== List of Changes ==

a) Misc. wording/grammar/punctuation changes.
b) Removed description of 'Kings'. This patience game was removed
because of bugs (see bug #84819, comment #3).
 - Stephan Kulow said in IRC there is even a bug about Kings still
being mentioned. I was unable to find it; can anybody else? ... or
maybe he just meant it *was* a bug, albeit unfiled.
c) Swapped Golf and Spider around, so Golf appears first. Matches menu
in game more closely now.
d) Credits on the 1st page were getting a little long. So I moved some
to just the Contributors section. Hope this is okay?

== Things I am unsure of ==

1) This app also has a manpage, in the repository. Is there a policy
user apps should have a manpage? Are these written by hand typically
(or with something like Manedit), or somehow generated automatically
from Docbook files through the autoconf/cmake scripts? Or by XSLT? I'm
wondering if I should make a separate diff for the app's manpage, when
amending a docbook manual.

2) Marked up a reference to a feature, like so:
- especially if you use the undo feature
+ especially if you use the <guibutton>Undo</guibutton> feature

In this case, the 'Undo' option is accessible through *both* the
toolbar button - and - the edit menu. I wasn't sure which I should
choose. When referring to a something like this, is that the correct
markup? Previously there were no markup tags around that option. 

3) Removed a section that read "Use of the menu is too easy to be
described now.". 
I felt if it isn't described, there isn't much point in telling the
user it wasn't going to be. :) 
Also, I later added a set of chapter tags, because that removal made it
go from listing terminology to rules of Klondike, on the same page.

_Is_ this appropriate, or should the menu options really be described?
If so, Phil R., you mentioned on a kbackgammon bug that you had a
script that might make  writing menu refs easier. Perhaps I could save
some time using that, if I need to document the menu?

4) Since the doc (if approved+committed) is going into /trunk, should I
change down the revisionnumber in the file to match the application
version in KDE 3.5.5 ?

5) Adding newish contributor entities cause the XML check to choke.
This is because they weren't present in KDE3. Say I add myself to the
contribs section. Should I add the entity for myself, or just put my
name and email address in manually to later be switched with the
entity?

'KHelpCenter' is rendered here using the entity &khelpcenter;. Using entities helps make sure capitalization is consistent across documentation. 

The name of the application is KHelpCenter, so the text is purely the name of the application - not necessarily the filename of the program. To start the application from the commandline, the command is all lower-case: ~$ khelpcenter.

I'm not sure how this could be best improved. Perhaps adding 'which you can start by going to X menuoption, pressing F1, or...'? The KHelpCenter's own manual, in my en_GB setting, refers to it as: The KHelpCenter - KDE Help Centre. A style policy rule would cover this.

Thanks for the patch, but this is a patch against the KAddressBook 
documentation in stable.
I updated the documentation in trunk 3 months ago, so trunk is more uptodate  
than stable and has already some of your corrections.

Could you please write a patch for the documentation in trunk?
I will commit it to trunk and then backport it to stable.

I attached a diff against KPat index.docbook from trunk, to my last
message. I since realised two further words could be converted to their
equivalent entities:
* 'Copyright' replaced with &copy; 
  Lines: 718, 722.

I can submit a new diff if needed. I'll hold off in case anybody brings
up other things that need changing.

Hi.

A discussion about harder to find documentation bugs came up recently
in the #kde-docs IRC channel. Phil Rodrigues said if I could compile a
list of the apps that have a "docs" component, that could be useful to
know.

Here are the results!

Product: kdevelop has components for 'doctreeview' and 'documentation
viewer', but this does not seem to be the same thing.
Product: kio has component 'help'. Again, this doesn't usually seem to
refer to ordinary user help. Some bugs are filed under this.
...
Product: 'kjsembed' has component 'Docs and examples'. No bugs have
been filed under this.
Product: 'krita' has component 'Documentation'. No bugs have been filed
under this.
Product: 'kst' has component for 'documentation' (and 'i18n'). Only one
bug [#93829], which is resolved, has been filed under this.

== Possible 'docs' bugs filed elsewhere in KDE Bugzilla ==
About 65 open bugs are documentation bugs not filed under the 'docs'
product. Generally in components like 'General', against the individual
apps. Including closed bugs brings the amount to about 350 (some of
these may be i18n-only issues).

Phil confirmed that only the 'docs' Product auto-mails to the
kde-doc-English list.

The Documentation Writing team page
[http://l10n.kde.org/docs/current.php] has an open tasks section with
the following Bugzilla queries set up:
* Applications that don't have any documentation, or missing
information in existing documents
* Applications manuals that need corrections or updates to existing
text
* Screenshots that need fixing

These search for 
a) Open bugs in Product: 'docs', that have Component: 'Missing' set.
b) As above but with Component: 'Corrections'.
b) As above but with Component: 'Screenshots'.

Documentation-related bugs that are not filed under 'Product: docs' do
not display to potential contributors using those queries (or during a
similar search using the Bugzilla web interface).

If requested, I can certainly re-file those bugs to Product: docs as
appropriate. However, that would generate anything from 60ish-300+ bug
e-mails to kde-doc-English in one swoop. That wouldn't make me very
popular. :o)

I for example would love to use the <part> tag(which is really usefull imho),
