The problem is *related* to the out-of-sourcing but I think is more general to 
autogen.sh failing in response to symlinks.

I haven't had time to look at it though (I was at work for 13 hours today and 
I've been averaging 10-11 per day all week) so unless someone else would like 
to either submit a patch or fix autogen.sh it's not going to bump to the top of 
my priority list until probably the June-July timeframe. :(
