It's a bit unfortunate that such discussions tend to be discussed in several 
locations, but it was mentioned elsewhere already that there will be a 
provider-independent interface for it.
It would be helpful for a fruitful discussion to come up with a list of open 
databases. I haven't seen one yet but would also be interested in it.
