The modification time and size of the desktop file is indeed nonsense. But
I guess, people expect informations about the link target. E.g. if it's a text
file, they might indeed want to know the modification date, but if it's a http
link, they might want to know the last visited date and if it's a device, they
might want to know the free space available.

But your patch is a welcome start ;)
