To your big surprise not everyone is using gentoo :) . If you're stuck with 
platforms like slower alphas and you don't want to spend compiling on them 
all the time other binary distros are a better choice. And if you want 
security updates for them then you easily end up with a system that's still 
using gcc-2.95. Still the machines are very valueable workstations, running 
KDE just fine.
