Alsa has been in development since late 1997 and has been fairly stable
for a while now. Linux 2.6 will be the first kernel to include it
officially, but it has been available separately in many distributions
for a long time.

By the way Linux 2.6 will likely be released before KDE 3.2. Linus has
stated that he will be doing 2.6pre kernels after the 2.5.70 release
which was on May 26.
