You confuse maintaining backwards compat with the last stable release 
with _creating_ backwards compat with the last-but-one stable release.

That said, the fact that Konq/E exists should give you a hint that what 
you propose should be possible.

From our experience with KMail, the problems are the people, not the 
"theories".
