I've ususally seen "Authentication failed" when the Keys were not setup up correctly.  Suggest you use nxsetup using default nomachine key (on freenx server and your client), get that working before you move to using your own generated key pair.   The nexsetup help has the details on this

I didn't end up getting any useful responses for this thread (which I tried to resurrect once already), so I gave up on NX for a while, but today I decided to give it another go, and managed to get a tiny bit farther.
