Hi,
Back in March the use of mate with freenx-server was discussed.
Marcelo Shima (Thu, 6 Mar 2014 14:16:44) pointed out that the
freenx-server package was updated to include mate-core as a
satisfactory dependency. Looking at the packages currently under
freenx-team on launchpad, however, I was not able to find a package
that allowed that:

ppa:freenx-team/trusty - freenx-server_0.7.3.zgit.120322.977c28d-0~ppa11
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4), debconf (>= 0.5.00) | debconf-2.0, nxagent
(>= 2.1.0-0), openssh-server, openssh-client, netcat, expect, bash (>=
2.05), adduser, binutils, x11-xserver-utils, python, nx-common,
gnome-session | gnome-session-fallback | kde-runtime |
kdebase-workspace-bin | ksmserver | xfce4-session | freenx-rdp |
freenx-vnc | lxde-core

ppa:freenx-team/testing -
freenx-server_0.7.3.zgit.140303.1848.e81c1e4-0~ppa2~trusty
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.4), debconf (>= 0.5.00) | debconf-2.0, nxagent
(>= 2.1.0-0), openssh-server, openssh-client, netcat, expect, bash (>=
2.05), adduser, binutils, x11-xserver-utils, python, nx-common,
lxde-core | gnome-session-flashback | kde-workspace | xfce4-session |
freenx-vnc | freenx-rdp

(The noticeable difference between the two are that gnome-session is
removed, so e.g. lxde-core is what would want to be installed first.
Am I looking in the wrong place?)

Also, the freenx-smb package is dependent on smbfs, which I saw in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/freenx-server/+bug/1185707 . I have not
attempted to use printing support, but the package as it is is
uninstallable. smbfs has been replaced by cifs-utils, but I have no
idea if it is a drop-in replacement (the latest discussion on this
mailing list seems to be from 2010).
