Thanks for the suggestion Clive!  That was actually spot on.  

For all of my efforts to make sure the libraries were visible, I ran
as root up until now.  Once I did: "sudo -u nx ldd nxagent", it was
obvious from the missing libraries in the output that it was a
permissions and visibility issue.  

Problem solved!
