        echo $LD_PRELOAD

No, its a bin. 

Try strings /usr/bin/kde4-config if you want something to look at !!

What does 

        ldd /usr/bin/kde4-config

produce.

Anything not /lib64/ ??

Are you sure gnome works over Freenx ??

This looks a bit like APPLICATION_LIBRARY_PRELOAD getting messed up.
