That probably depends on what you want to achieve, and how much control you 
have over the clients. Whether you tunnel everything through ssh or have 
print, sound and file sharing all through separate ports would also affect 
things. I would look at forcing the level of compression, possibly starting 
the client wrapped with trickle, or a fiendish set of iptables rules.
