PS. I use 2.1.0-17 client version, which was the latest on nomachine website, at the time of installation.

... shame on me! I am not so sure how this came about, but it guess, I must
have had a package named "libxcompext1" but with a different content floating
around from a previous attempt. I just checked again, and the package on kern.nl
does indeed contain "libXcompext.so.2". On another machine with a brand new Etch
installation, I tried it again (just adding the kern.nl to source.list); this
time it also worked out of the box (at least with nxclient 1.5.x)

(Actually, I had meanwhile managed to get the other packages
(packages.debianbase.de) working too, but not with the current nx client -
the backingstore patches didn't fix it ...)
