[FreeNX-kNX] Black screen after NX login

Hello,

I've got FreeNX set up on a Red Hat 9 server, and when I log in with  
the NX client, the "!M" logo flashes briefly, then I get a black  
screen.  If I ssh to the server and run DISPLAY=localhost:1004  
startkde, then KDE comes up in the NX session and everything runs  
fine.  But it's my understanding that this step shouldn't be necessary.

Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?

I am running FreeNX 0.4.4, from http://fedoranews.org/contributors/ 
rick_stout/freenx/, and I'm using the NX client on OS X.
