Same here:

frederik at homer:~$ glxgears
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display "unix:1000.0".
Error: couldn't get an RGB, Double-buffered visual

Not that I need it for anything, personally. 
I just wanted to try to see if it might work here.
