I am tempted to say "too late".

There is currently the FreeNX development in full swing. This
is an effort to create a GPL'd NX Server which is compatible
to the NoMachine commercial offerings.

Here is the current source code (requires the 1.4.0 NX snapshot
from NoMachine, the most recent one is the fifth):
