<br>Sidecars do not replace the database, and are not necessary for digikam to 

<br>work. You can safely delete them. Iirc, digikam only reads from sidecars when 

you ask it.

<br>Note that there is one situation where you may lose data when deleting the 

<br>sidecar: you use another program to modify the xmps (e.g. darktable, or 

lightroom) and some of the metadata in the sidecar cannot be used by digikam.

<br>Those metadata will stay in the sidecar, and will not be stored in the 

database. Even then, removing the sidecars will not compromise the database.

<br>

<br>If you want to take extra precautions, make a copy of the database in a safe 

location before removing the sidecars.
