<div dir="auto">I would use the built in image editor tool under the tab color. There you can find the tool "Farbkurven anpassen" in german. in english it could be called "color curves". I can't find a way to do this easily in digikam/showfoto.<br>

I use my phone camera to "scan" a black and white document. I get a <br>
photo perfectly readable, but quite difficult to print, the white paper <br>
come gray (and use lot of ink), printer characters are too grey.<br>

of course (:-) the characters are not equal in darkness, the lighting is <br>
more important on a part of the image.<br>
