<p>Couple of updates:</p>
<p>1) Created a local thumbnails database which has improved
performance</p>
<blockquote>
<ul>
<li>Photos and main digiKam database still on the NAS</li>
<ul>
<li>Due to size of album and NAS being a RAID, I don't want to
make the album or database local</li>
</ul>
<li>With the thumbnails local:</li>
<ul>
<li>It takes nearly a minute to get to the "Initializing Main
View" dialog, and 2:30 minutes for the album to open</li>
<li>Depending on the number of photos in an album, it can take
from 15 seconds (5-10 photos) to 50 seconds (350-450 photos)
to open</li>
<li>When the album opens, the thumbnails are fully populated</li>
</ul>
</ul>
</blockquote>
<p>2) I recognize digiKam is not multi-user and only have it open
on one machine at a time</p>
<ul>
<li>The comment about different path format is interesting. The
album root is the same for both the Windows machine and the
Linux machine. However, there is the issue of the folder
separator being different between Windows (\) and Linux (/).</li>
</ul>
<p><br>
</p>
<ul>
<li>Is the use case for the external database to have the server
on the same machine as digiKam and the albums?</li>
<li>Is the performance I am experiencing opening albums typical
for a NAS based set-up?</li>
</ul>
<p>Any references or advice will be greatly appreciated!</p>
<p>Thank you!</p>

35000 images is not much.

Based on the tables in the MariaDB database, it appears the
database contains information like tags and stars about each
photo. If the database is on the local machine, any changes made
would not be visible when access the photos from another machine.

That's not a problem.
1. DK is a single user application.
2. I have an rsync script that synchronize the database to the nas
and start DK, then rsync back to the nas after use.
Note be careful when accessing the data from multiple boxes with
multiple OSes, the path as stored differently. I'm on Linux only.
