First, after installing it, you have to tell where the pictures are. If you are unsure where they are, you can just add the whole C: and D: (in Digikam's settings) and let it scan all folders. The first time can take a while, be patient. The only issue with this is that it will also find irrelevant images that the computer might have lying around, like icons, screenshots, sample images, etc. That process won't use almost any extra space, since the pictures win't be moved or copied from their original location.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">I'd make sure to check the option to save the information (faces, keywords, date...) in the images themselves. Otherwise that information would be lost if you reinstall windows or move the images to another computer.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">In any case, I'd recommend you to put all pictures in subfolders, one folder per "event", and sorted by date, a bit like this:</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">- 2018-09-01 Tony's birthday</div><div dir="auto">- 2019-07 Trip to Paris</div><div dir="auto">- etc.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">You get the idea. It makes it easier to find them in the file browser.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">So, once Digikam has found all the pictures in the computer, it's time to tag them with keywords and faces.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">First, I recommend you sort the pictures by creation date, so they are sorted chronologically. Then, right click on a folder (Albums panel on the right) and select "Scan for faces"). Once it finishes, if you go to the "People" panel you will see the faces that digikam has detected in that folder. Now it's time to write their names. The next time you scan for faces, Digikam will try to match nee faces to the existing ones, making suggestions that you'll have to confirm or reject.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">And that's basically it. It's a bit labor intensive, but with some patience, you can tag all your relatives.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">However, in your case, I might suggest an alternative for the tagging the people, and that's using an old program called Picasa. It's been discontinued but you can still find it online and has the advantage that it can group faces by person even before you write their name, so it's very good at finding specific people across different folders. Be sure to enable an option to "Store Name Tags in Photos" in the settings, and then those faces will appear in Digikam too.</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">I hope that information helps, and ask away if you have more questions!</div><div dir="auto"><br></div><div dir="auto">Marc</div></div><div><br><div class="elided-text">On Jul 16, 2022 17:48, Tony Schwartz <InelUnit@outlook.com> wrote:<br type="attribution"><blockquote style="margin:0 0 0 0.8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex"><div style="word-wrap:break-word">

<p>I’ve never posted to a mailing list/user group. I think I got this. I have several thousand photos on 2 hard drives (C:\ 550GB SSD) & (D:\ 2 TB). Some with faces and many without. A lot of these people are deceased and I want to find
them. They are on random places on both hard drives. I’d rather just import everything into DIGI. WHY? I have ADHD and I might have put some photos in dumb places. Sorry, it won’t happen again! My father passed so a video will be made with friends or
old photos I find. I’ve used MS Photos / People since day one. I don’t like it. I do not think I like windows to be honest.<br>
<br>
I’d like to have Digi search my c:\ & d:\ and identify everything - I am sure this is a simple set up option. Once it searches and finds all the faces then what? If I had to guess there are 5,000 photos total(myself and others uploaded). After I get all
the faces recognized and tagged. I am assuming there is going to be a massive pool (database) of photos somewhere. I will not care about most of them, Should I worry about it? For now I mostly want to find the people. Once I am better organized, despite
ADHD, all photos will go into D:\photos. Space is not a huge issue but I would like to save as much as possible. I will use Digikam for a lot more than this later. But right now fishing for old photos in random directories. Is what I want to do. Then easily
work with them (tag, identify; share – I do not know)</p>
<p> </p>
<p>I think it is that simple right? Have DIGI “Index” C & D drive. Then look for the scan for people button? Then somehow delete the thousands and thousands of photos digi threw into a pile or database? Is there a smarter way? I want
to do a “full sweep” for people/faces. Leave no one behind.<br>
<br>
Thanks,<br>
