<p>I ran some test using the same database in Digikam 7.3, and I noticed the same behavior, so it's probably not something that happened from digikam 7.3 and 7.4. Most of these pictures were first tagged using digikam 5.9 or digikam 6.0, and they were lacking most XML metadata. However, previous versions of digikam put them in their correct place within the hierarchy, for some reason it don't fully understand. I still have to check if merging a tag with the one in the proper place of the hierarchy writes all the necessary XML metadata so the problem does not reappear with that picture.</p>
<p>In any case, the issue with the keywords in iPhone pictures is still there and it's quite annoying, since the only workaround I have found is to complete recreate the metadata for the images using exiftool outside digikam.

<p>Both, in the metadata viewer, it is as if there was no metadata regarding keywords (only the face regions seem to be there), so the only references to keywords are in IPTC and EXIF. And in the tags hierarchy, the keywords appear as a play list, having lost its hierarchy (makes sense, since only XMP metadata stores hierarchy). Maybe the metadata was wrong all along, and only now digikam has read it correctly, but I suspect the way XMP metadata is interpreted changed between digikam 7.3 and 7.4.

<p>Also, I don't know if it's related or not, but pictures taken with iphones seem to be problematic since digikam 7.4, with metadata not being written correctly into the file. I suspect it's only those containing faces, but I can't say for sure. Even if you correct it manually in digikam, metadata is not saved correctly to XMP, and tags also appear as a flat list without hierarchy. I am using digikam Build date: 30/11/21 10:27 (target: Debug) Rev.: <a href="https://invent.kde.org/graphics/digikam/commit/3d2d9c9df3d9b8940502e89b83d39ce74a335754" moz-do-not-send="true"><span style=" text-decoration: underline; color:#9cd4ff;">3d2d9c9df3d9b8940502e89b83d39ce74a335754</span></a> that I installed via flatpak.
