I haven't tried it myself, and I'm not even sure whether it would work, but here's an idea. In the application you are currently using, assign all the tags you want to import to a single photo. Add photo to digiKam, and choose Item -> Reread Metadata From File.
In theory this should add all tags in the photo to the digiKam database.<br>
