<p>Hello,</p>
<p>this is totally under your control.</p>
<p>You can save everything in the image using Exif or IPTC tags
which are compatible with many other apps.<br>
</p>
<p>Or you can choose not to touch the original image file at all
(which is generally a good idea) and create so-called "Sidecar"
files named XMP which contain all metadata. Many other apps
support this, also commercial apps.</p>
<p>Or you can decide to just stick to Digikams internal SQLite
database, which is created anyway for speed, but syncs with the
other options if you choose to do so.</p>
<p>Digikam is totally flexible and tries to be as compatible as
possible in this regard.<br>
However, this means that it makes sense to think about your
workflow before you jump in - the number of options that Digikam
has is quite large.</p>
<p>Personally, I let Digikam create XMP sidecar files and save
everything there. Original image files are never modified.<br>
There are some metadata that would get lost - e.g. album comments,
image groupings, image version groupings - but these can be
recreated e.g. using a script when necessary.<br>
</p>
<p>Cheers,<br>
Jens<br>
