<p>I got similar problem from time to time and the tips was to
uncheck the paramater "activate edition and managment of non
destructive version" (sorry translated from french ) in the
version tabs of editor settings</p>
<p>it solved such problem for me (and I can reactivate later)</p>

Configure > image editor > versioning > in main view:
always show<br>
original images (checked on)<br>

It didn't make a difference. Same number displayed: 12447 items

the tags show: 13651<br>
