Dear Giles<br>
Thank you for your quick and clear reply.<br>
I will make more money donations in near future.<br>
The reason for my question is: <br>
Launch Digikam > plug in USB cable > Turn on Nikon D3100
camera.<br>
Digikam tab: Import > cameras > Nikon DSC D3100 ( auto
detected )<br>
When i click on the last item there is an Error message.<br>
<style type="text/css">p, li { white-space: pre-wrap; }</style>
<p style="margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px;">"Failed to connect to the
camera. Please make sure it is connected properly and turned on.
Would you like to try again?"<br>
</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px;">I assumed this means that
my camera is not supported.<br>
<br>
</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px;">I do have Digikam access
to my Nikon D3100 NEF photos by first downloading to my computer
HDD via Nautilus.<br>
I have not reported this via your Bug reporting system because
even after reading your Digikam handbook i am not sure that i have
not made a mistake somewhere.<br>
</p>
<p style="margin: 0px; text-indent: 0px;"><br>
The flickr link shows Digikam version 2.0.0- beta2 Rev.: 1217876m
<br>
As supporting Nikon D3100 in the supported cameras list.<br>
I assume that as this version is not packaged in the Ubuntu
repository ,it is too unstable for Gnome Desktop.<br>
Kind Regards John Bestevaar<br>

<pre wrap="">John,
Thanks to support digiKam project.
I'm glad to said that D3100 is already supported by digiKam, as Nikon
RAW files :
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/digikam/5400617648/">http://www.flickr.com/photos/digikam/5400617648/</a>
... through libraw library : <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.libraw.org">http://www.libraw.org</a>
Also, Nikon metadata are supported very well by Exiv2 library, used in
background by digiKam :
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.exiv2.org">http://www.exiv2.org</a>
So, there is nothing to do i think, excepted if you has discovered a
dysfunction somewhere...

<pre wrap="">Dear Sirs
I believe in open source and i believe in embedded metada inside images as
the best way to associate symbolic character based information with an
image.
I am working on a open source free website project where i hope to make
extensive use of XMP/XML as containers for a lot of detailed information
about the content/subject of each image.(50,000 images)
Therefore as an ordinary user ( i am not a developer or programmer) i am
prepared to contribute money to your efforts.
Specifically: How much money would it take to enable my Digikam application
to support my Nikon D3100 camera on my system?
My system: Ubuntu 10.04,1 LTS, Gnome 2.30.2, Nautilus 2.30.1, Digikam
1.2.0-0ubuntu, Kipi-plugins 1.2.0-0ubuntu
More information available if you wish.
Kind Regards John Bestevaar
