This is how I do it.

1 import images to a folder.
2 Open folder in Digikam. Click on the folder title bar to select all of the new photos.
3 Click on CAPTIONS/TAGS. Click on the INFORMATION tab at the top. Just below the INFORMATION tab select what template you want to use. You will have needed to fill the template out before hand.
4 You should now see the template information in the INFORMATION tab.
5 Click on the APPLY button at the bottom of the window.
6 wait for all the images to get updated. You can see the progress at the bottom of the window.
7 Click on any ONE image then click on METADATA tab on right then on IPTC or XMP tabs on the top to see the IPTC or XMP metadata. It works for for me.

If you want to add TAGS like who is in the photo or what it's a photo of then yes you'll need to add them sometimes one image at a time or sometimes you can select several at a time to tag them using the CAPTIONS/TAGS tab. Again this is how I do it. I'm not a professional photographer so this method may not work for you and it may not even be the best way to do it.

Good luck!

> From: caulier.gilles@gmail.com
> Date: Fri, 9 Apr 2010 08:35:06 +0200
> To: digikam-users@kde.org
> Subject: Re: [Digikam-users] Templates for IPTC & XMP ?
>
> 2010/4/8 Hadmut Danisch <hadmut@danisch.de>:
> > Sorry,
> >
> > but I don't see how this should work:
> >
> > On Tue, Apr 06, 2010 at 09:26:59PM +0200, Gilles Caulier wrote:
> >> 2010/4/6 Hadmut Danisch <hadmut@danisch.de>:
> >> > On Tue, Apr 06, 2010 at 03:05:26PM +0200, Gilles Caulier wrote:
> >> >> Use right metadata settings.
