Have you tried doing the face recognition through the maintenance tool 
("Tools" -> "Maintenance") with "Whole albums collection" *unchecked* ?
(That's assuming the new photo's you add are in their own folder, if you add 
them to a folder containing thousands of images, treatment will always be 
slower than needed)
