Ah! I was missing the 'upgrade' step.

apt-cache showpkg says:

Package: libkipi8 	4:4.7.4-oneiric~ppa2

Package: libkdcraw20	4:4.7.2-oneiric~ppa2

digikam now starts up ok. Yay! :-)

but still crashes :-(
