my fault was: i didn't know the preview was embedded too!
the feature that i was searching for was just "extract previews" then
(shame on me)

"dcraw -e <file.nef>" will do the work

(i usually shot in raw because it makes some post production
artefacts easier to do but i don't dislike the generated jpegs
of my camera :)
