Ah ok! :-)
I tested it again, and it really isn't working.
I did:

1. sudo make uninstall
2. double check /usr for old digikam stuff
3. restarted
4. kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental
5. make -j4
6. sudo make -j4 install/fast
7. kbuildsycoca4 --noincremental

Nothing. So I guess it can be assumed that the slaves have properly reloaded.
