I'd imagine an extension of the current tags concept to store always a region (defaults to the whole image) of an item. e.g. rather than just storing a boolean "has_tag" for the tag, digikam must store a region. Smaller regions can be defined that represent e.g. faces or other special notes of interest.

I can see how Face Detection could automate the assignment of these people tags.

For my purposes I would require that the tag region is queryable via the KIPI API.
