Unless transKode (o a similar
package) is added as a hard Amarok dependency, most users wouldn't realize
the package and the associated functionality even
exist.
My feeling is that Amarok resents for not having a default transcoding script,
and it gets away with it because you can
download one with a few clicks
(and that's why I bothered with a binary package until now).
What's sure, is that I won't be doing it anymore, because the current situation
where people download the script and see it crash more often than not actually
hurts both transKode and Amarok more than it helps...
Now, though I would rather see transKode become the transcoding script included
with Amarok, I'm obviously a little biased. And as I said before, I don't even know
if scripts will be handled the same way in the future (for instance, if the current
scripting framework gets replaces with Kross, C++ binary scripts might be out of
the question to begin with). There are other options, however, such as some scripts
in kde-apps that use either ffmpeg or GStreamer for the transcoding. With a bit of work
one of those could be turned into something more usable. If there is
interest in this I might
be able to help with it too.

Sergio.

----- Mensaje original ----
De: Colin Guthrie <gmane@colin.guthr.ie>
Para: amarok@kde.org
Enviado: martes 26 de febrero de 2008, 19:17:30
Asunto: Re: transKode

Sergio
