This won't help much. The problem is not so much the absolute contrast between 
the slider and the dark background (nor the white icon) but the dominant 
contrast between the background and the white part of the icon.

The solution would be to invoke* the background color and (partially**) 
"invert" the icon.

I'll play around on the svg a bit.

* unfortunately that means to either make it always brighter or always darker 
or keep the background color (meaning to de-emphasize it...) - unless we use 
different icons for dark and bright backgrounds
** i'd prefer to add a halo that supports the inner icon in dark surroundings, 
but that's still inkscape exclusive :'(
